What was the title of Alan Turing's 1945 computer design report?
Answer
Proposed Electronic Calculator
Answer
Proposed Electronic Calculator
Alan Turing’s 1945 computer design report was titled “Proposed Electronic Calculator.” The report outlined the design of the Automatic Computing Engine, or ACE, a general-purpose electronic stored-program computer planned at Britain’s National Physical Laboratory.
Turing began working at the NPL in October 1945 after being recruited by John Womersley. By the end of that year, he had produced a remarkably detailed design covering the machine’s logical structure, memory, instructions, input and output, and estimated construction costs. The report was submitted as an internal NPL document and was formally circulated in early 1946.
A common mix-up is to answer “Automatic Computing Engine.” That was the name of the proposed machine, not the title of Turing’s report. Another nearby milestone was Turing’s 1936 paper “On Computable Numbers,” which described an abstract computing machine rather than a practical electronic computer. The ACE design helped establish Turing as an important pioneer of stored-program computer architecture.
