What was the score when Newcastle United hosted Liverpool in 2026–27 Matchweek 1?

The story behind the answer

Newcastle United drew 2–2 with Liverpool in 2026–27 Matchweek 1.

The match was played at St James’ Park on Sunday, 23 August 2026. Liverpool appeared to be heading for defeat until Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time, rescuing a point for the visitors.

The penalty was awarded after Victor Muñoz was fouled by Lewis Hall in the Newcastle area. Szoboszlai took responsibility and placed the spot-kick into the top-left corner. The equaliser produced a dramatic finish to a match that had already included strong emotions and tributes to former Newcastle manager and player Kevin Keegan.

The result gave both clubs one point from the opening weekend. Alexander Isak, who had left Newcastle for Liverpool the previous summer, was also a major storyline because home supporters booed him whenever he touched the ball. The scoreline is easy to confuse with Manchester City’s 2–1 comeback over Bournemouth, but Newcastle and Liverpool finished level.
