Georgia O'Keeffe's Jimson Weed sold for $44.4 million at auction in 2014. The price made it the most expensive work by a female artist sold at auction at that time.
The painting, also called Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1, dates from 1936 and depicts a large white jimson-weed flower. Its enlarged scale is characteristic of O'Keeffe's approach to flowers, which turns a familiar natural subject into an imposing abstracted form.
Sotheby's sold the work in New York in November 2014. The buyer was the philanthropist and art collector Alice Walton, who acquired it for the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas.
Auction records can change as later sales occur, so the historical wording matters: $44.4 million was the record when the 2014 sale happened. The result also drew attention to the long undervaluation of women artists in the art market.
