What was the real name of the author Lewis Carroll?
Answer
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
Answer
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
The real name of the author Lewis Carroll was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson.
Dodgson was born in Daresbury, Cheshire, in 1832 and became a mathematician, logician, photographer, Anglican deacon, and university lecturer as well as a writer. He spent most of his academic career at Christ Church, Oxford, where he taught mathematics and became closely associated with the college’s intellectual and social life.
“Lewis Carroll” was a pen name built from his first two names. Dodgson translated Charles Lutwidge into the Latinized form “Carolus Ludovicus,” rendered the names back into English as Carroll Lewis, and then reversed them to create Lewis Carroll. The pseudonym was chosen for publication, while he used Charles Dodgson in his academic and private life.
Under the Carroll name, he wrote “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” “Through the Looking-Glass,” and the nonsense poem “The Hunting of the Snark.” His mathematical work appeared under Dodgson, helping explain why the two names became associated with different sides of the same career.
He died in Guildford, Surrey, in 1898, three years before the twentieth century began.
