What was the public-law number that created the America250 commission?

The story behind the answer

Public Law 114–196 created the America250 commission.

The law, enacted on July 22, 2016, established the United States Semiquincentennial Commission as the congressionally appointed body for planning and promoting the 250th anniversary of American independence. President Barack Obama signed it into law.

Its provisions addressed the commission’s membership, responsibilities, and national commemorative planning. The legislation also called for federal support for anniversary-related coins, postage stamps, appropriately named naval vessels, and events in locations significant to United States history.

Public Law 114–196 is easy to confuse with Public Law 116–282, which amended the commission’s governing law in 2020. The later measure changed funding rules, modified ex officio membership, and made technical adjustments. Public Law 117–103 was a later appropriations measure, not the act that originally created the commission.
