The Pennsylvania State House was renamed Independence Hall, the building linked to the Declaration and America250.
The building in Philadelphia served as the meeting place of the Second Continental Congress when it debated and adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was also the meeting place of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, making it significant to both the Declaration and the later Constitution.
The Pennsylvania State House was completed in 1753. Its assembly room became associated with the creation of the United States because delegates debated independence there and later framed the Constitution in the same building. The name Independence Hall became established in the nineteenth century as the site gained national symbolic importance.
Independence Hall is part of Independence National Historical Park and is recognized as a World Heritage Site. The Liberty Bell Center stands nearby, but the bell and the hall are different landmarks. Philadelphia's concentration of Revolutionary-era sites makes it a major location for commemorations connected with the nation's 250th anniversary.
