What was the original UK title of the first Harry Potter book?

The story behind the answer

The original UK title of the first Harry Potter book was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.

Bloomsbury published the novel in the United Kingdom on 26 June 1997. It introduced Harry Potter, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and major characters including Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The book became the first entry in a seven-novel series.

For the American edition, Scholastic changed the title to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The change was made because the publisher believed “sorcerer” would be more immediately understandable to American children. The story is otherwise substantially the same, although some wording was adjusted for the US edition.
