What was the original name of the London Underground’s Jubilee line when it opened?

The story behind the answer

The London Underground’s Jubilee line was originally planned under the name Fleet line.

The proposed route was associated with the Fleet River, which runs underground through central London. In the 1970s, the planned railway was renamed the Jubilee line to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977.

The first section opened in 1979 between Stanmore and Charing Cross. The line was later extended eastward in stages, eventually reaching Stratford in 1999. That extension transformed the line into a major orbital and east-west route serving the Docklands and parts of east London.

The Jubilee line is sometimes mistaken for a line created entirely in 1979, but parts of its northern route had previously belonged to the Bakerloo line. Its silver colour on the Tube map reflects the line’s name and branding.
