The original name of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao’s flower-covered sculpture is Puppy.
Puppy is a monumental sculpture by American artist Jeff Koons. It depicts a West Highland white terrier assembled from a steel substructure, soil, and living plants. The work stands outside the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and combines the scale of public monument with the approachable image of a domestic dog.
Koons created Puppy in 1992 for an exhibition at the Schloss Arolsen in Germany. The Guggenheim Bilbao later acquired it, and the sculpture became one of the museum’s most recognizable symbols. Its flowers are maintained and replaced as part of the work’s living surface.
The title is simply Puppy, not a Spanish translation or an official nickname. Visitors sometimes describe it as a topiary dog, but that phrase identifies its appearance rather than its title.
