Patio Diet Cola
Answer
Patio Diet Cola
What was the original name of Diet Pepsi? Its original name was Patio Diet Cola.
PepsiCo test-marketed the drink in the United States in 1963 as Patio Diet Cola. It was created during the early growth of the diet-soft-drink market, when consumers were seeking beverages with little or no sugar. The Patio brand also appeared in other diet soda flavors, including orange, root beer, grape, and ginger ale.
In 1964, Pepsi renamed the cola Diet Pepsi and launched it nationally. The new name connected the low-calorie drink directly to the established Pepsi brand, making its identity easier for shoppers to recognize. Diet Pepsi became one of the major competitors to Coca-Cola’s Tab and later Diet Coke.
“Patio” is sometimes remembered as a separate soft-drink brand, but Patio Diet Cola was effectively the predecessor of Diet Pepsi. The broader Patio line disappeared as the Diet Pepsi name took over. In some countries, the product has also been marketed under names such as Pepsi Light.
