The future Destiny’s Child group was originally called Girl’s Tyme.
The group formed in Houston, Texas, in 1990, bringing together Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LaTavia Roberson, and LeToya Luckett. Girl’s Tyme became known locally and appeared on the television talent show Star Search in 1993, although it did not win.
After management changes and a major-label deal, the group adopted the name Destiny’s Child. Its self-titled debut album was released in 1998, not 1997, and featured the early hit “No, No, No.” That timing is a common source of confusion when tracing the group’s history.
Destiny’s Child later became one of the best-selling female groups in music, with the lineup changing before Beyoncé, Rowland, and Michelle Williams became the best-known trio. The original Girl’s Tyme name remains an important part of Beyoncé’s pre-fame biography.
