What was the original English title of the city now commonly called Istanbul in Assassin’s Creed Revelations?

The story behind the answer

Constantinople is the original English title of the city featured in Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

The game is set largely in Constantinople during the early sixteenth century, when the city was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. Modern English commonly calls the city Istanbul, but Constantinople is the historical name used for the game’s setting and for the period’s political and cultural context.

Ezio Auditore travels there to investigate Altaïr’s legacy and search for keys connected with the Masyaf vault. The story also includes Ottoman figures such as Prince Suleiman and Yusuf Tazim, leader of the local Assassin bureau.

Constantinople and Istanbul refer to the same modern city, but they are not interchangeable in every historical context. Byzantium is an earlier name for the settlement, while Constantinople was the name most associated with the Byzantine and early Ottoman-era setting.
