Speedee was the official name of McDonald’s early mascot before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known character.
Speedee was depicted as a small chef-like figure and represented the speedy service promised by the original McDonald’s system. The mascot connected the brand to the restaurant’s fast-service identity during the period when hamburgers, fries, and shakes were prepared for quick customer service.
The name is sometimes confused with Speedy Gonzales, the Warner Bros. cartoon character. They are unrelated. Speedee was created for McDonald’s branding and appeared in restaurant signs and promotional material.
Ronald McDonald gradually replaced Speedee in the public-facing identity during the 1960s. Even so, Speedee remains an important link between McDonald’s early service promise and its later character-based advertising.
