The 2024 U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team with Simone Biles was nicknamed the Golden Girls.
Biles announced the name after the team won gold in the women’s artistic team final at the Paris Olympics. The nickname celebrated both the team’s victory and its experience: the five-member squad was the oldest U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastics team in decades, with an average age of about 22.
The team consisted of Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, and Hezly Rivera. Their victory returned the United States to the top of the Olympic team podium after the team’s silver medal in Tokyo.
The name is easy to confuse with the Final Five, the 2016 Rio champions, or the Fighting Four, the nickname associated with the reduced U.S. lineup that won silver in Tokyo. “Golden Girls” also alludes to the classic television sitcom of the same name.
