What was the New Beetle's Volkswagen Group platform code?

The story behind the answer

The Volkswagen New Beetle used Volkswagen Group’s A4 platform, also designated PQ34.

The platform was the engineering foundation shared with several Volkswagen Group compact cars. The New Beetle was closely related beneath its rounded body to the fourth-generation Golf, and the PQ34 designation identifies the transverse-engine compact-car architecture used across the group.

The naming can be confusing because Volkswagen used more than one platform-labeling system. A4 is the generation-style designation, while PQ34 is the revised alphanumeric code: P indicates a passenger-car platform, Q indicates a transverse engine layout, and the numbers identify the platform’s class and generation. Thus A4 and PQ34 refer to the same underlying platform here.

The New Beetle’s retro appearance did not mean it mechanically followed the original Beetle. The original car had a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive, whereas the New Beetle used a front-mounted engine and front-wheel drive. A5 (PQ35) belongs to the later platform generation, while B5 (PL45) is associated with longitudinal-engine mid-size models such as the Audi A4 and Volkswagen Passat.
