Answer
John Shakespeare
What was the name of William Shakespeare’s father? His father was John Shakespeare.
John Shakespeare was a glove maker, leatherworker, wool dealer, and property owner who became an important civic figure in Stratford-upon-Avon. He moved from nearby Snitterfield to Stratford and married Mary Arden, a member of a prosperous Warwickshire farming family. William was their eldest surviving son.
John served in local government, holding offices that included alderman and bailiff, the latter roughly comparable to mayor. His public position helped place the Shakespeare family among Stratford’s respectable householders. The family lived in a house on Henley Street, now preserved as Shakespeare’s Birthplace.
John’s fortunes later declined. Financial difficulties, debt, and reduced civic involvement affected the family during William’s youth, and John eventually stopped attending council meetings. He recovered some status when a coat of arms was granted to the family in 1596, an achievement William helped pursue. John died in 1601, after which William inherited the family home. He is sometimes confused with William’s son-in-law, physician John Hall, but Hall married William’s daughter Susanna.
