What was the name of Thomas Edison’s 1914 sound-film system?

The story behind the answer

Thomas Edison’s 1914 sound-film system was called the Kinetophone.

The Kinetophone combined motion pictures from the Kinetoscope tradition with synchronized sound from a phonograph. Edison’s company demonstrated and exhibited talking pictures using the system, attempting to match recorded dialogue and music with projected or viewed film.

Synchronization was technically difficult, and the Kinetophone did not become a lasting commercial standard. It is often confused with the Kinetoscope, which was Edison’s earlier peep-show motion-picture viewer, and with the Vitaphone, a later Warner Bros. sound system. The Kinetophone is therefore a specific name for Edison’s early sound-film experiment.
