What was the name of the West Berlin radio station that broadcast news and music across the divided city from 1946?

The story behind the answer

RIAS was the West Berlin radio station that broadcast news and music across the divided city from 1946.

RIAS stood for Rundfunk im amerikanischen Sektor, or “Broadcasting in the American Sector.” The United States established it in the aftermath of World War II, and it became one of the most influential Western media outlets heard in East Germany. Its programming included news, political discussion, culture, entertainment, and music.

The station’s broadcasts crossed the physical barrier of the Berlin Wall and reached listeners far beyond West Berlin. East German authorities regarded Western radio as politically hostile and attempted to limit its influence, but many people still listened. RIAS continued operating through the Wall era and was merged with Deutschlandfunk and Deutschlandradio in 1993 after German reunification. Its history illustrates how information, like people and transport, remained contested during Berlin’s division.
