What was the name of the village near Jerusalem where Jesus stayed with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus?

The story behind the answer

The village near Jerusalem where Jesus stayed with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus was Bethany.

John identifies Bethany as the home of Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, and places it about fifteen stadia from Jerusalem. The village appears prominently in the account of Lazarus’s death and raising. In the Synoptic Gospels, Jesus also visits the home of Martha and Mary, and Bethany is associated with events near the end of his ministry.

Bethany was located on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives, along the route from Jerusalem toward Jericho. Its position made it a natural stopping place for travelers approaching the capital from the east.

Bethany should not be confused with Bethphage, another nearby village mentioned in the entry into Jerusalem narratives. Emmaus is a different location associated with the post-resurrection journey in Luke. Modern al-Eizariya is traditionally identified with biblical Bethany.
