What was the name of the third-party Reddit iOS app that Reddit acquired in 2014?

The story behind the answer

The third-party Reddit iOS app Reddit acquired in 2014 was Alien Blue.

Alien Blue was created by Australian developer Jason “Jase” Morrissey and first appeared on Apple’s App Store in May 2010. It became popular because it offered a polished way to browse Reddit on iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads at a time when Reddit’s own iOS offering, iReddit, received limited development.

Reddit acquired Alien Blue in October 2014 for an undisclosed sum and made it the company’s official iOS application. The acquisition also brought Morrissey into Reddit’s orbit, while the Alien Blue name and much of the app’s identity remained visible to users. Apollo was a later third-party iOS client, while Sync and BaconReader were separate Reddit apps, so they are common distractors rather than the acquired app.

Alien Blue was eventually discontinued in April 2016. Reddit replaced it with a rewritten official application for iOS and Android, citing the older app’s aging codebase and the need for a more modern mobile foundation.
