What was the name of the society where Mendel presented his pea plant findings?
Answer
Natural History Society of Brno
Answer
Natural History Society of Brno
Mendel presented his pea plant findings to the Natural History Society of Brno. The society was a local scientific organization in Brno, then known by its German name Brünn, in the Austrian Empire’s Moravia region.
He presented his paper, Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden, or Experiments on Plant Hybridization, at two society meetings on 8 February and 8 March 1865. The paper described years of carefully controlled crosses involving pea plants and helped establish the statistical patterns later known as Mendel’s laws of inheritance.
The society printed the work in its proceedings in 1866. Despite the importance of the paper, it attracted little attention from the wider scientific community for decades. It was treated largely as a specialized study of plant hybridization rather than as a general theory of heredity.
The Royal Society of London is a tempting distractor because Mendel’s work was later translated and discussed by British scientists, especially William Bateson. However, Mendel did not present the original findings there. The presentation took place in Brno, where Mendel was an Augustinian friar at St. Thomas’s Abbey.
