Experiments on Plant Hybrids
Answer
Experiments on Plant Hybrids
Mendel’s landmark paper on pea plants was titled Experiments on Plant Hybrids.
The paper’s original German title was Versuche über Pflanzen-Hybriden. Mendel presented it to the Natural History Society of Brno at meetings on 8 February and 8 March 1865, and it was published in the society’s proceedings in 1866. English translations vary slightly, including Experiments on Plant Hybridization, but Experiments on Plant Hybrids is a fair and recognized rendering of the title.
In the paper, Mendel described controlled crosses involving seven pairs of pea traits, including seed shape, seed color, flower color, pod form, pod color, flower position, and plant height. His results supported the idea that inherited characteristics are transmitted as discrete factors rather than blending together.
The paper initially attracted little attention and was largely overlooked for decades. Around 1900, Hugo de Vries, Carl Correns, and Erich von Tschermak independently reached related conclusions and helped bring Mendel’s work back to scientific attention. The paper later became a foundation of genetics.
