What was the name of the ship's baker who survived the sinking?

The Titanic's baker who survived the sinking was Charles Joughin, the ship's chief baker. He was responsible for a staff of 13 bakers and helped supply bread for the lifeboats during the evacuation.

Joughin was off duty when Titanic struck the iceberg, but he quickly sent his staff to the boat deck with provisions. He later helped women and children near Lifeboat 10 and threw deck chairs overboard to provide possible flotation aids. He did not ultimately board the lifeboat assigned to him.

Joughin became famous for his account of remaining aboard until the very end and entering the water as the stern sank. He later reached the overturned Collapsible B and was eventually rescued. Stories often claim that alcohol kept him warm, but that explanation is misleading: alcohol can increase heat loss and worsen hypothermia. Historians also regard some details of the length of his survival in the freezing water as uncertain, although his survival and role as Titanic's chief baker are well documented.
