What ocean did RMS Titanic sink in? RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean.
The ship went down on 15 April 1912, about 370 miles southeast of Newfoundland, after striking an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. The collision occurred late on 14 April, and Titanic disappeared beneath the surface at about 2:20 a.m. ship’s time.
Titanic carried more than 2,200 people and had only 20 lifeboats, including four collapsible boats. The nearby rescue ship Carpathia arrived roughly an hour and a half after the sinking and rescued 710 survivors. The disaster led to major changes in maritime safety rules, including the development of SOLAS.
The wreck rests in two main sections on the seabed at a depth of roughly 12,500 feet. It was located in 1985 by a French-American expedition led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. A common mix-up is confusing the North Atlantic with the nearby waters south of Newfoundland; the location is still part of the North Atlantic Ocean.
