The sentient Volkswagen Beetle in Disney films is named Herbie.
Herbie is a fictional pearl-white 1963 Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of his own. He first appeared in Disney’s The Love Bug, which was released in 1968, and became the central character in a series of racing comedies. Herbie can drive himself, react emotionally, and compete against much faster cars despite his modest mechanical origins.
The character is recognizable by red, white, and blue racing stripes and the number 53, painted on his hood and body. Herbie’s personality is expressed through his movements, horn, and mischievous behavior rather than ordinary dialogue. His human owners often discover that the apparently ordinary car is unusually determined and independent.
The Love Bug was followed by Herbie Rides Again, Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, and Herbie Goes Bananas. Disney later revisited the character in the 1997 television film The Love Bug and the 2005 theatrical movie Herbie: Fully Loaded.
“Bumblebee” is a different fictional vehicle from Transformers, while “Chitty” refers to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Neither is Disney’s sentient Beetle.
