The scientific package deployed by Apollo 11 was the Early Apollo Surface Experiments Package, or EASEP.
Apollo 11 carried a deliberately simplified experiment suite because the mission’s only planned lunar excursion was short and NASA wanted the crew to be able to abort quickly. Buzz Aldrin deployed EASEP near the Lunar Module Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility during the mission’s surface activity on July 21, 1969.
EASEP included a passive seismometer, a lunar dust detector and a laser-ranging retroreflector. The retroreflector was especially valuable: observatories on Earth could bounce lasers off it to measure the Moon’s distance and its gradual movement away from Earth. The seismometer also transmitted data about moonquakes and impacts.
A common mix-up is ALSEP, the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package. ALSEP was the larger, more capable package used on later landing missions, beginning with Apollo 12. Apollo 11’s EASEP was a lighter predecessor designed for rapid deployment; LRRR was only one instrument within the Apollo 11 surface experiment payload, not the package’s name.
