What was the name of the pamphlet by Thomas Paine that encouraged independence?

The story behind the answer

The pamphlet by Thomas Paine that encouraged American independence was Common Sense.

Published anonymously in Philadelphia on January 10, 1776, the 47-page pamphlet argued that the American colonies should break completely from Great Britain. Paine attacked hereditary monarchy, challenged the logic of rule by a distant king, and presented independence in language ordinary colonists could understand.

Common Sense spread rapidly through the Thirteen Colonies. It was sold in print shops, passed between households, and read aloud in taverns and meeting places. Its influence helped turn independence from a controversial idea into a subject of widespread public debate, although the Continental Congress had its own political and military reasons for issuing the Declaration of Independence later that year.

A common mix-up is The American Crisis, another Paine work. That series supported the Patriot cause during the war and began with the famous phrase about trying men's souls. Rights of Man came later, in 1791, as Paine's defense of the French Revolution.
