Queen Victoria was born at Kensington Palace in London on 24 May 1819. She was the only child of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, and Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Her birth followed a succession crisis caused by the death of Princess Charlotte of Wales, the only legitimate child of the future George IV.
