What was the name of the overall Allied plan for invading Japan in 1945?
Answer
Operation Downfall
Answer
Operation Downfall
Operation Downfall was the overall Allied plan for invading Japan in 1945. It combined two proposed campaigns: Operation Olympic, aimed at southern Kyushu, and Operation Coronet, aimed at the Kanto Plain near Tokyo.
Olympic was scheduled for November 1945, while Coronet was planned for March 1946. The plan required a massive concentration of Allied land, sea, and air forces, and planners expected fierce Japanese resistance on the home islands.
Japan’s surrender canceled Downfall before either invasion occurred. The plan is therefore a proposed operation, not a battle that was fought. Operation Downfall is sometimes mistaken for Olympic because Olympic was its first phase, but Downfall was the umbrella name for the entire projected invasion.
