Abiquiu was the New Mexico village where Georgia O'Keeffe restored an adobe house.
O'Keeffe began searching for a permanent home in the Abiquiu area after becoming deeply attached to northern New Mexico. She acquired an abandoned adobe house in the village in 1945 and spent years having it restored. The property eventually became one of her principal homes and studios.
Its courtyard, door, walls, and surrounding landscape appear repeatedly in her work. The famous door-with-wall motif is connected with this house and shows how O'Keeffe turned a personal architectural detail into an abstract subject. She lived and worked there for much of the later part of her career.
Abiquiu is distinct from Ghost Ranch, another nearby place strongly associated with O'Keeffe. She owned important property at both locations. Santa Fe, farther south, became the location of the museum established after her death.
