Georgia O'Keeffe kept a studio at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico.
Ghost Ranch is a retreat and education center near Abiquiu in northern New Mexico. O'Keeffe began visiting the area in 1934 and rented a house there, using the surrounding cliffs, mesas, and desert terrain as recurring subjects.
The landscape became one of the defining settings of her career. She painted distinctive formations such as the red cliffs and the nearby Cerro Pedernal, often simplifying them into bold arrangements of color and shape. She also found animal bones and other objects in the desert and incorporated them into still lifes.
Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu are related but not interchangeable. O'Keeffe maintained a studio at Ghost Ranch while later owning and restoring a historic adobe house in the village of Abiquiu. Both places are associated with her New Mexico years.
