Answer
Abiquiu Home and Studio
Answer
Abiquiu Home and Studio
Georgia O'Keeffe restored the Abiquiu Home and Studio in Abiquiu, New Mexico.
O'Keeffe discovered the abandoned adobe house in Abiquiu during the 1930s and was attracted to its walls, courtyard, and distinctive black door. She eventually purchased the property and worked with architect Juan Hamilton to restore it during the 1940s and 1950s.
The home became one of her principal residences after her permanent move to New Mexico in 1949. Its architecture and surrounding landscape appear in several paintings, especially compositions centered on the courtyard wall and door.
The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum now preserves the house and studio as a historic site. It is separate from Ghost Ranch, where O'Keeffe also lived and worked. That distinction helps explain why both places appear so often in accounts of her Southwestern career.
