What was the name of the mountain where Jesus was transfigured before Peter, James, and John?

The story behind the answer

The mountain of Jesus’ transfiguration is an unnamed high mountain in the Gospel accounts.

Matthew, Mark, and Luke all describe Jesus taking Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, where his appearance changes and he is seen with Moses and Elijah. A bright cloud appears, and a voice identifies Jesus as God’s beloved Son. The event is known as the Transfiguration.

None of the three Synoptic Gospels names the mountain. Because of this, later Christian tradition proposed locations including Mount Tabor and Mount Hermon. Those identifications are not stated as facts in the New Testament.

The Gospel of Luke adds that the disciples were sleepy and that the event occurred while Jesus was praying. The unnamed setting is an important distinction: a quiz answer naming Mount Tabor may reflect tradition, but the textual answer is simply an unnamed high mountain.
