What was the name of the matriarch elephant studied by Cynthia Moss who died in 2009 at age 65?

The story behind the answer

The matriarch studied by Cynthia Moss was named Echo.

Echo was an African bush elephant in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park. Cynthia Moss began following her in 1973, and Echo became the first subject of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project, one of the longest-running studies of a wild land mammal.

Over more than 30 years, researchers observed Echo and her family’s movements, relationships, communication, reproduction, and care of calves. Her life helped scientists show how elephant societies depend on experienced older females, whose knowledge can guide a herd toward food and water and help it respond to danger.

Echo died on 3 May 2009. Sources describe her age as approximately 64 or 65, so the quiz’s age-65 wording is a reasonable rounded account. She is sometimes confused with Eleanor, another famous elephant matriarch studied in Amboseli-related research, but the Cynthia Moss subject who became widely known through books and films was Echo.
