Which Kenyan national park is the site of the Amboseli Elephant Research Project?

The story behind the answer

The Amboseli Elephant Research Project is located in Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya. It is a long-running field study of African elephant behavior, social relationships, age structure, and population changes.

Cynthia Moss and Harvey Croze initiated the project in 1972. Researchers have followed individual elephants over decades, creating detailed life histories and records of family groups, associations, births, deaths, and leadership. The project has collected information on more than 2,000 elephants and is widely regarded as the longest-running study of wild elephant behavior.

Amboseli is especially valuable for research because its elephant population has been less disrupted by poaching than many other African populations. The park covers roughly 390 square kilometers and contains swamps that remain important during dry periods. The famous matriarch Echo, studied for decades and featured in documentaries, became one of the project's best-known subjects.
