The large vessel built by Noah in the Bible is called the Ark.
In English Bibles, the word “ark” comes from a term meaning a chest, box, or container. The same English word is also used for the Ark of the Covenant, but Noah’s Ark and the Covenant chest are different objects with different stories. Noah’s Ark is the vessel built to preserve Noah’s family and animals during the Flood.
Genesis describes the Ark as having rooms, a door in its side, a roof, and three decks. It gives dimensions of 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. Because the length of a cubit varied in antiquity, modern conversions are approximate. The Hebrew narrative focuses on its construction and purpose rather than assigning the vessel a personal name.
