What was the name of the high priest’s servant whose ear was cut off during Jesus’ arrest?

The story behind the answer

The high priest’s servant whose ear was cut off during Jesus’ arrest was named Malchus.

Malchus appears by name only in the Gospel of John, chapter 18. During the arrest in a garden, Simon Peter is identified as the disciple who uses a sword and cuts off the servant’s right ear. John names the injured servant as Malchus. In the Synoptic Gospels, the incident is also reported, but the servant is not named there.

Luke adds that Jesus heals the injured ear, while Matthew records Jesus’ warning against using the sword. The Gospel accounts differ in how much detail they provide, but they agree that a disciple resists the arrest and that Jesus does not respond by leading an armed defense.

Malchus is sometimes confused with Caiaphas or Annas, prominent priestly figures connected with the proceedings. Those men are not the injured servant. The detail is also separate from the later trial before Pontius Pilate, which is a different stage of the passion narrative.
