What was the name of the garden where Jesus prayed before his arrest?

The story behind the answer

The garden where Jesus prayed before his arrest was Gethsemane.

The name appears in the Synoptic Gospels, which describe Jesus going there with his disciples after the Last Supper. He prays in anguish while his disciples struggle to remain awake. Judas then arrives with an armed crowd, identifying Jesus and leading to his arrest.

John’s Gospel describes Jesus crossing the Kidron Valley and entering a garden, but it does not name the place Gethsemane in the same way. The name is therefore especially associated with Matthew, Mark, and Luke’s passion narratives.

Gethsemane is traditionally located at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. The modern site contains ancient olive trees, although it is impossible to prove that any surviving tree dates to the first century. The garden should not be confused with Golgotha, the place of crucifixion.
