The first shoe to bear the Nike Swoosh was The Nike.

The Nike was a football boot produced in 1971, when Blue Ribbon Sports was developing its own footwear brand. Until then, the company had primarily distributed Japanese Onitsuka Tiger shoes. Phil Knight needed a distinctive mark for the new product, so graphic design student Carolyn Davidson created the curved symbol for $35.

The shoe was not a major commercial success, but it established the visual identity that would become inseparable from Nike. The Swoosh was first used on June 18, 1971, and the company soon expanded its in-house footwear range.

The Nike Cortez is a frequent wrong answer because it was Nike’s first official track shoe and became the company’s first major running-shoe hit. It appeared with the Swoosh at the 1972 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials. The Waffle Trainer came later, growing out of Bill Bowerman’s waffle-pattern sole experiments.
