Kanto was the first Pokémon region explored in the original Game Boy games.
Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow are set across Kanto, a region containing towns, routes, caves, seas, and the Pokémon League. Players begin their journey in Pallet Town and travel through locations such as Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, and Saffron City.
Kanto’s design established the structure used by later Pokémon games. Trainers earn Gym Badges, confront a villainous team, travel through a connected region, and challenge the Elite Four and Champion. The region is also home to the original 151 Pokémon species.
Kanto is sometimes confused with the real-world Kantō region of Japan, which helped inspire its name and broad geography. In the games, however, Kanto is a fictional Pokémon setting. It later reappeared in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as a post-game area, linking the first two generations.
