What was the name of the first person born through successful human IVF?
Answer
Louise Brown
Answer
Louise Brown
Louise Brown was the first person born through successful human in vitro fertilisation, arriving on 25 July 1978. She was born at Oldham General Hospital in England after an embryo created in a laboratory was transferred to her mother, Lesley Brown.
The pioneering treatment was developed by physiologist Robert Edwards and gynaecologist Patrick Steptoe. Edwards received the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for the development of IVF, while Steptoe had died in 1988 and therefore could not receive the prize.
IVF does not mean that a baby develops entirely outside the body. Fertilisation occurs in a laboratory, but the embryo is transferred to the uterus, where pregnancy continues. Louise Brown later had children conceived naturally, helping counter the misconception that people born through IVF cannot themselves conceive without assisted reproduction.
