What was the name of the first god created by the cow Auðumbla? His name was Búri.
Auðumbla was the primeval cow that nourished Ymir with four rivers of milk. To feed herself, she licked salty rime stones. On the first day she uncovered Búri’s hair, on the second his head, and on the third his entire body. Búri emerged as a powerful and beautiful divine ancestor.
Búri had a son named Borr, whose wife was the jötunn Bestla. Their three sons were Odin, Vili, and Vé, the gods who later killed Ymir and shaped the world from his body. Búri therefore stands at the beginning of the Æsir genealogical line.
The episode is found in Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, composed in 13th-century Iceland, and is not narrated in the surviving Poetic Edda. “Created” is a quiz-friendly simplification: the myth says Auðumbla licked him free from the ice rather than crafting him in the usual sense.
