What was the name of the first commercial central power station built by Thomas Edison?
Answer
Pearl Street Station
Answer
Pearl Street Station
The first commercial central power station built by Thomas Edison was Pearl Street Station.
Edison’s Pearl Street Station began operating in lower Manhattan in 1882. It formed the center of an early direct-current electrical system that generated power centrally and distributed it through underground conductors to nearby customers. The station initially served a small, concentrated area rather than an entire city.
The facility used steam engines to drive dynamos and supplied electricity primarily for electric lighting. Its launch demonstrated that a complete power system required more than a lamp: it needed generators, conductors, meters, switches, safety equipment, and paying customers.
Pearl Street Station is sometimes confused with Holborn Viaduct power station in London, which opened earlier in 1882 and used Edison-related technology. Pearl Street was Edison’s New York station and the landmark associated with his first commercial central-station system.
