What was the name of the fictional band in The Monkees’ television series?

The story behind the answer

The fictional band in The Monkees’ television series was also called The Monkees.

The Monkees was an American sitcom that premiered on NBC in September 1966. It followed four fictionalized musicians living together while attempting to build a career, mixing scripted comedy with musical performances. The characters were based on the public personas of Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork.

Although the television premise was fictional, the performers became a genuine recording group. Their debut single, “Last Train to Clarksville,” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s first two albums also topped the Billboard album chart.

The Monkees did not always play every instrument on their studio recordings, especially early in their career, but they increasingly exercised creative control. The group also appeared in the 1968 feature film Head.
