The East German politician whose misstatement on November 9, 1989 led to the opening of the border was Günter Schabowski.
Schabowski was a member of the ruling Socialist Unity Party’s Politburo and served as its spokesperson during the final months of East Germany. At an internationally televised press conference, he announced new travel regulations intended to ease restrictions on East German citizens leaving the country.
When asked when the rules would take effect, Schabowski consulted his notes and answered, “As far as I know, this is effective immediately.” The regulations were not supposed to produce an immediate, unrestricted opening, but the statement spread rapidly through television and radio broadcasts. Thousands of East Berliners went to border crossings, where guards, lacking clear instructions, eventually opened the gates.
A common mix-up is crediting the opening to a formal decision by Schabowski alone. The announcement was the trigger, but mass protests, the Hungarian border opening, weakening Soviet support for the East German government, and sustained public pressure had already made the system unstable.
