The debut album from the Pet Shop Boys was Please. The English synth-pop duo released it on 24 March 1986 through Parlophone in the United Kingdom and EMI America in the United States.
Please helped establish the musical identity of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, combining electronic production, dance rhythms, dry wit, and emotionally detached storytelling. Its track list included “West End Girls,” which became the duo’s first major international hit, along with “Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money),” “Love Comes Quickly,” and “Suburbia.”
The album’s title was deliberately conversational. Tennant and Lowe explained that it was chosen so a customer could walk into a record shop and ask for “the Pet Shop Boys album, please.” That small joke suited the duo’s understated sense of humor and their interest in ordinary language.
Please reached number three on the UK Albums Chart and number seven on the US Billboard 200. It remains the Pet Shop Boys’ highest-charting US album and their only album certified platinum by the RIAA.
