The Black Place was the dark New Mexico landscape area repeatedly painted by Georgia O'Keeffe.
The site was about 150 miles west of her home at Ghost Ranch. O'Keeffe described it as a mile-long stretch of black hills, with a white road winding through them. Its stark forms and unusual tonal contrasts attracted her attention, and she returned to the subject in multiple paintings.
The Black Place should not be confused with Black Mesa, another New Mexico landform associated with O'Keeffe's work. The title is also not the name of a single painting; it identifies a landscape motif and location. O'Keeffe frequently transformed recognizable places into simplified arrangements of color, contour, and space rather than presenting them as conventional topographical views.
