xAI was announced in July 2023 with the stated goal of building artificial-intelligence systems and advancing understanding of the universe. The company developed Grok, a conversational AI system made available through Musk's social-media platform, X.
xAI is distinct from OpenAI, which Musk co-founded in 2015 but later left. It is also separate from Tesla, although Musk has discussed relationships among his companies and their access to computing resources.
The lowercase styling “xAI” can lead to confusion with the general technical term XAI, meaning explainable artificial intelligence. In this context, xAI is the name of the company founded by Musk and other collaborators.
