What was the name of the 19th-century ship that crashed on the island?

The story behind the answer

The 19th-century ship that crashed on the island was the Black Rock. It was a sailing vessel that became one of Lost’s most important historical mysteries, sitting deep in the jungle far from the coast.

The ship’s backstory is revealed gradually. In the episode “Ab Aeterno,” the Black Rock is shown sailing in 1867 under Captain Magnus Hanso, with Richard Alpert aboard as a prisoner. Jacob is implied to have drawn the ship toward the island, where a massive wave swept it inland and destroyed part of the statue of Taweret.

The Black Rock is often confused with the Kahana, a modern freighter associated with Charles Widmore’s expedition. The Kahana arrived much later and was not the ship found in the jungle. The Black Rock’s connection to the Hanso family also links it to the wider history of the DHARMA Initiative.
