What was the name of the 1868 treaty that ended Red Cloud's War?
Answer
Treaty of Fort Laramie
Answer
Treaty of Fort Laramie
The Treaty of Fort Laramie of 1868 ended Red Cloud’s War between the United States and the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Northern Arapaho.
The treaty required the United States to abandon its military posts along the Bozeman Trail and recognized a large Great Sioux Reservation west of the Missouri River. It also recognized Lakota control of the Black Hills and adjoining territory.
Red Cloud signed after the forts were removed, making the agreement a major diplomatic victory for the Lakota. The treaty’s provisions were later violated after gold was discovered in the Black Hills and American miners entered the region.
The 1868 agreement is distinct from the 1851 Treaty of Fort Laramie, which established different territorial arrangements among Plains nations and the United States. The later treaty became central to twentieth-century legal disputes over the Black Hills.
